Strand: Politics, Conflict & Society
Strand unit: 1916 and the foundation of the state
Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:
  • acquire insights into the attitudes and actions of people in contemporary Ireland
  • acquire some knowledge of the major personalities, events or developments in these periods
  • begin to develop some appreciation of the ‘mind-set’ of former generations
  • develop a growing sense of personal, national, European and wider identities
  • engage in simple studies of some of the more important aspects of periods in which political changes or movements have had an important influence on the lives of people in Ireland
  • explore, discuss, compare and develop some simple understanding of the attitudes, beliefs, motivations and actions of differing individuals and groups of people in the past
Suggestions for use: This virtual tour is approximately 45 minutes long and tells the story of the 1916 Easter Rising through the artefacts on display in the National Museum of Ireland's 'Proclaiming a Republic' exhibition, which was in the Decorative Arts and History Museum at Collins Barracks from 2016 until 2020. The resource also contains a set of Teachers' Notes, which can be used to enhance the learning experience. These highlight each stop of the tour, and include questions and classroom activities. There is also a short survey of the Teachers' Notes which can be used to offer the Education and Outreach Team at Collins Barracks any feedback to improve this resource for students.
